This Is Me

The studentMy name is Jørn Sandvik Nilsson. I am 23 winters old, I am a student, I am a Dj and a tranceaddict, I am a programmer, a linux user and a geek!

I study at the Norwegian University of Technology and Science (NUTS), at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics (link). If you know what cybernetics is, I don’t need to tell you it’s the coolest way of trying to become smart, most of the time we play with helicopters, model trains and lego, we’ve even got a tank turret in our lab. Apart from the fun it’s quite much work, with an overdose of math that could kill an elephant. Follow the links to the department’s crappy website and learn more!

Dj VishnuBetween my interests I really don’t have much spare time, but if I had to prioritize, djing would be my first choice. I became interested in djing sometime at the of the 90’s (’98, ‘99 who knows? crazy times) after I bought my first trance record (Dj Tiesto - Magik two - Story of the fall), which i listened to non stop for a few weeks. I’ve been a tranceaddict ever since. I first stared mixing with a program I found on the net (Virtual Dj v 1.0), but soon bought my hardware. Now I play regularly as Dj Vishnu on different venues in Trondheim, Norway with Dj Yngin. The two of us for the dj duo Y&V Project, and we do all gigs together. I used the name Dj Vishnu after drawing a really cool logo with a 6-handed dj tearing up the decks ;) . Lately we have been playing not just trance, but mostly Club House. Check out the Y&V Project for charts and livesets if you’re interested in our kind of music. (Usually referred to as “ringtones” by our friends)

Ubuntu linux I am a proud linux user. I started off playing with an old RedHat distro to set up LAMP just for fun at home (Linux - Apache - Mysql - PHP/Perl/Python). Now I manage a fullblown web, mail, ftp, sql ++ server located under a desk behind some drawers on the university campus. Don’t tell anyone. The last year I’ve also migrated to using linux as my primary desktop as well. I really am a debian fan (mostly because of apt), but today I’m running ubuntu, which is is debian based. I am really amazed how for the linux desktop community have come, with it’s amazing customization possiblities it can match whatever Microsoft and Apple can throw at it, and more! Watch the tech section of my blog and you’ll se I’ll be posting a few useful guides and articles. (The only time I have to hide away and boot windows is when I’ve got a new must-play game..)
